Nobody that volunteered to be a Coach or a Referee started out as an expert. But with training that is provided by AYSO, you have the opportunity to learn. If everyone said, "I can't do it", or "I've never even seen a game before the season started" (as was my case), we'd have darn few people helping all the youths participating in the AYSO Section 891 experience.
The trick is to go out and try it. Do your best. Gain experience. Then come back season after season. You will gain experience and confidence with every game.
What better way to show your kids that you are behind their AYSO experience than to become a part of it. Who knows, you might even get to have some fun too!
